Abstract:

Includes contents of scrapbook (vol. 1) documenting George W. Trippon's personal experience in the United States military during World War Two and his subsequent interest in the war, the military and related topics. Scrapbook includes original military documents, rations and ration books, patches, pins, snapshot photographs, ephemera and clippings. Collection also includes contents of a photograph album pertaining to Trippon's friends and associates, including other gays and lesbians, during his World War Two service (vol. 2), and other photograph albums pertaining to family, friends and cruise ship travel to Alaska, Greece and other locations (vols. 3-7). Very little of the material pertains to Trippon's career in fashion and entertainment. Pictured throughout much of the collection is Trippon's partner of over 60 years, James W. Price.

George W. Trippon was born in Aurora, Illinois in 1916 to Romanian immigrant parents. In the 1930s his family moved to Hollywood, where George danced in musicals for the motion picture industry and apprenticed as a costume designer. Trippon served in World War Two from 1942 to 1944 and later studied fashion design in Paris on a G.I. Bill. In the 1950s he founded the Trippon Fashion Center School of Dress Design in Hollywood. From 1972 to 1994 he was the host of the television series Sew What's New. He also authored books on fashion design, and published memoirs pertaining to his partner James W. Price and his hometown of Aurora. George W. Trippon died in 2010.
